Abstract

Objective: This paper summarized the design of the scenarios using a computer-controlled human patient for training of clinical skills, and explored students′ views on simulation design. Methods Five simulated scenarios were designed using the high fidelity human patient simulator, including appendicitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, gastrointestinal bleeding, myocardial infarction and critical trauma. A total of 113 baccalaureate nursing students(77 in year 2,36 in year 3)completed all simulated scenarios over 36 learning hours. Results : Students were satisfied with the scene setting, learning objectives, arrangement, knowledge transferability, and decision-making skills in simulation. Students viewed the simulation as the best learning experience, and would like to participate in a simulation again if they are given an opportunity. However, they considered that the SimMan wasn′t real enough to imitate real-working situations. There were no facial and emotional expressions, and slow verbal responses to inquiries in simulation. The smell, color, quality and amount of vomit or sputum were not demonstrated. Conclusion : Students were satisfied with the simulation, but the fidelity of scenarios needs to be improved. It was recommended that standard patients should be used to design the simulated scenarios in order to imitate facial expressions, emotional and psycho-social interactions.
